The festival continues our traditions of organizing a few nice chess events in Gjøvik. Some memorable moments were:

  • Gjøvik Sjakklubbs 75th-year anniversary festival 1983, with the top group results: Nunn, Browne and Adorján 6 p., Miles 5½, Agdestein 5, Spassky and Ftacnik 4½, Karlsson 3½, Helmers 2½, Øgaard 1½
  • Nordic chess championship 1985, with top group results: Agdestein, Hjartarson and H.Olafsson 8 p., Curt Hansen 7½, Helmers 6 ½, Yrjölä 5½, Schüssler 5, Wiedenkeller 4½, Mäki and Øst Hansen 4, Westerinen 3½, Jens Chr. Hansen 2
  • Nordic ch.ship play-off 1985: Agdestein (champion) and H.Olafsson 3 p., Hjartarson 0
  • Norwegian championship 1991: Record participation with 587 players. Champion: Jonathan Tisdall
  • During this championship: Match of 4 classical games Karpov – Agdestein 2-2

A worried Boris Spassky against Simen Agdestein (16) at the 75th year Anniversary tournament of 1983. Simen's victory made headlines not only for the tournament, but for himself and for Norwegian chess.

Simen Agdestein made a strong 2-2 result against Anatoly Karpov in a match with classical timelimits at Gjøvik cinema in 1991, held during the Norwegian national championships.
